The functions of the Legal Department include:

(i) Advise the Commission on all legal matters relating to its functions as might be referred to it by the Chairman or the Commission.
(ii) Track and maintain accurate records of all laws passed by the National Assembly (including Abuja) and all the thirty-six (36) States Assemblies that might be of interest to the Commission or directly affect the functions of the Commission.
(iii) Examine any necessary changes in the existing Federal and State laws and regulation which would enhance the performance of the Commission’s functions and advise it accordingly on the appropriate measure to be taken.
(iv) Advise the Commission on legal representation in any court of law in Nigeria as and when necessary either as principal prosecutor or in defense of the Commission when prosecuted.
(v) Advise the Commission on any important legal issue that might be referred to it by the Plenary Session or Chairman of the Commission in order to promote efficiency.
(vi) Prepare and arrange for the prosecution in the law court of any matter of interest to the Commission.
(vii) Prepare proposals for Executive Bills on all matters emanating from the Commission that require to be passed into Law.
(viii) Maintain a register of the tenure of membership of the Commission and advise the Chairman on expiration at least three (3) months to the expiry date such as to enable him to advise Mr. President on renewal or replacement of the membership.
(ix) Collaborate with the Fiscal Efficiency Department on Remuneration and Monetisation to ensure compliance with the implementation of the Remuneration Package as passed by the National Assembly and State Assemblies and also determined by the Commission.
(x) Carry out any other assignment that might be given to it by the Chairman or the Commission.
(xi) Issuing Certify True Copy of Commission’s public documents to the public.
