PAST CHAIRMEN OF THE COMMISSION
The pioneer Chairman of the Commission was Lt. Gen. T. Y. Danjuma (rtd), GCON (1988-1993) with whom served seven (7) Members on the Board and a Secretary to pilot the affairs of the body. The Commission was constituted in September, 1988 and was later reconstituted in 1990 to comply with the legal provision of one Member from each State of the Federation. This, therefore expanded the membership to twenty one (21). Thereafter, Chief Ernest Shonekan, GCFR, was appointed as Chairman of the Commission from February to November, 1993.
The 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) under Section 153(1) made the Commission one of the fourteen (14) Federal Executive Bodies. Consequently, the Commission was re-constituted with Engr. Hamman A. Tukur, OFR, FNSE, as its Chairman and thirty seven (37) Members appointed from 20th September, 1999 to 12th May, 2010. After the expiration of Engr. Hamman Tukur’s tenure in May, 2010, Alh. Salisu Jega took over as Acting Chairman until December, 2010, when Engr. Elias N. Mbam, FNSE, FICA was appointed as Chairman along with twenty (20) other Members on the Board of the Commission.
At the expiration of the first tenure of Engr. Elias N. Mbam, FNSE, FICA in November, 2015, Shetima Umar Abba Gana, DF.IoD, FICA took over the Chairmanship of the Commission in acting capacity. He handed over to Casimir I. Anyanwu, PhD, on 9th May, 2019 also as Acting Chairman.
On Friday, 28th June, 2019, Casimir I. Anyanwu, PhD handed over to Engr. Elias N. Mbam, FNSE, FICA for his second tenure with twenty nine (29) Members on the Board as at then.
Presently, the Chairman is Mohammed Bello Shehu, who took over from Engr. Elias Mbam after he resigned to contest in the 2023 general election.
